Uses solar radiation to provide internal space heating!
GlassX is a translucent, multifunctional glazing solution that produces internal heating, thermal storage and day lighting. GlassX provides an innovative, clean, renewable space heating solution by using solar radiation to produce internal heating.
Salt crystals within the glass system store radiant heat from the sun and slowly release the stored energy into the interior space. The GlassX system allows day lighting while regulating the temperature of the interior space. The panels have an average interior surface temperature of 27oC acting as a large, uniform, heat radiator and providing thermal comfort within the room.
The product has no mechanical or electronic components requiring no service and minimal maintenance. GlassX converts solar radiation into thermal energy to be gradually released over a period of time. The storage/heating is limited to periods when the sun is lower in the sky so as to avoid overheating in summer months. GlassX provides an increase in thermal mass equivalent to a 20cm thick concrete wall in only a fraction of the space.
Overheating protection is integrated within the product by means of a prismatic glass panel (or alternatively adjustable blinds) providing seasonal light deflection; deflecting light/heat during summer periods when the sun is higher in the sky and allowing the shallow winter sun to pass without loss. The phase change material within GlassX helps to stabilise the room temperature at less than 26oC resulting in a comfortable environment in winter and reduced cooling loads in summer.
The GlassX system offers 4 components within the one unit; transparent heat insulation, overheating protection, energy conversion and thermal storage. The panels can offer a reduction in energy rating of 20-40% and have a solar thermal gain efficiency of 34-40%. The glass has a U-value of less than 0.5W/m2K.
GlassX is available in various sizes and the ceramic screen print on the interior surface is available in a range of colours.
Awards:
GlassX AG is awarded the Watt d'Or 2009 (class building)
GlassX Crystal offers a quadruple glazing solution with a phase change material to store radiant heat and a prism plate to provide seasonal light deflection. The unit also includes two panes of glass with a low-E coating and inert gases in two gaps. This system is ideal for situations where interior space heating is required in winter but has the added advantage of stabilising internal temperatures in summer to reduce cooling loads.
The Glass Prism is a triple glazed unit that includes a prism plate to provide seasonal light and heat deflection. This unit is ideally suited to northern façades with limited summer shading. The prism will allow light and heat to pass through in winter, while deflecting it in summer. Two of the panes also include a low-E coating and the two gaps between panes have inert gas.
A quadruple glazed solution that includes phase change material and two panes of glass with a low-E coating. This unit suits situations where internal space heating is required. The interior safety glass has ceramic silk-screen printing.

This triple glazed unit offers a slimmer solution than the GlassX Comfort. This unit also includes phase change material but only one pane with a low-E coating. The interior surface comes with the option of ceramic silk-screen printing.
This double glazed unit is the slimmest of all units and includes phase change material only.
